I've Come to Hate That Word

What word, you ask?

Annoy.

As in, "She's annoying me."

Why am I hating this word?

Well, because every time I hear it used lately whether it be on TV, in my classroom, or by anyone in general, it's insinuating that the person who is being "annoyed" is sooooooooo important that they can't be bothered by someone.

The "annoying" person isn't hurting them and really isn't disturbing them, just simply bothering them. And, with the kids, instead of dealing with it themselves by moving to a different area or asking them to stop, they expect me to come over and stop the person from talking to them, trying to be their friend, or breathing in general.

I think the word has become grossly overused. And the last 1000 times I've heard it (give or take about 5) it has only magnified the "annoyed" person's self-centeredness.

When I was in 8th grade, my English class had to write an autobiography and part of that was to interview our parents. The only thing I can remember my mom saying in her interview is that she didn't like the word "cool". Back then I thought that was really odd. Who gets hung up on a word like that?

Now I know what she meant.
