Birthday Week

It's my birthday week. Birthdays are weird when you're a grown-up. Birthdays are even weirder when you're a teacher. You get stuck between the kid and grown-up birthday celebrations. You kind of want to play it cool and the kids have a totally different plan. To them, birthdays are big competition for Christmas in the favorite day of the year contest.
This is how the kids helped me celebrate my birthday:
The whole school sang happy birthday to me in the morning.
I got about 10 homemade cards where my kiddos told me how awesome I was (that never gets old!).
One student told the class, "Mrs. Wies can be as mean as she wants to be because it's her birthday."
Another student told me (after being shocked that you didn't get a day off on your birthday), "When I'm superintendent, all the teachers will get a day off on their birthday and $20."
One of my volleyball girls (who is one of my former fifth graders) told the whole team that I was just turning 22 (instead of 29).
And this conversation with my niece was the cherry on top:
Jaylee - "Happy birsday Aunt Carlei!"
Me - "Thanks Jayboo! Did you send me any presents?"
Jaylee - "No."
Me - "Why not?"
Jaylee - "Cause you live far away."
Me - "Well, I get you presents for your birthday."
Jaylee - "Well...the puppies will give your birsday kisses!"
Me - "How old do think I am?"
Jaylee - "Ummm, I sink you are twenty or somethin'."
Me - "Well, I am way older than that!"
Jaylee - "Oh. Are you six?"
I guess when you're five, six is pretty old!
All in all, a pretty good birthday week!
